The University of Iowa partners with CEA CAPA to offer students the opportunity to intern in Paris while also taking academic internship-based coursework in Paris, France, in a variety of academic areas related to their field of study. The French economy is the 7th largest in the world and 3rd largest in Europe. Home to 28 of the 500 biggest companies in the world and thousands of small and medium-sized businesses, France is a treasure trove of internship placement opportunities. It is one of the world’s top agricultural producers and the second largest agricultural exporter, the leading nation for nuclear energy, and the most visited tourist destination on earth. Virtually every career field imaginable is represented in the French economy, which means students can find a high-quality internship here no matter where their professional interests lie.
Gain valuable hands-on skills in an international internship in one of Europe's economic and cultural capitals. Internship placements are designed to be in a business or organization that is aligned with the student’s professional and academic goals. Internships in Paris are ideal for the students who would like to immerse themselves in local French culture while developing practical on-the-job skills in fields such as marketing, management, journalism, communication, international relations, and other related disciplines. Students interested in this opportunity should speak with the Study Abroad advisor for this program to learn more about possible placements.
Previous French language knowledge is encouraged but not required.
Students will enroll in an internship seminar course that includes an academic seminar and an internship placement.
Students can expect to spend a minimum of 120 placement hours at their internship placement. Together, the internship seminar and internship placement are worth 3 credits. 3 credits is the maximum possible through UI with this program.
CEA CAPA’s summer internship program includes an academic seminar and an internship placement. The internship seminar meets for 22 contact hours and you'll spend 120 hours at your internship placement. Together, your seminar and internship placement are worth 3 credits. Your internship placement hours may vary depending on industry standards for your career field and will be determined after you arrive.
Internship placement is on a first-come, first-served basis. Internship positions are selective; students who demonstrate both professionalism and commitment throughout the process are most successful in securing placements.
The placement process involves three Skype or phone interviews: a screening interview with your site specialist, a job placement interview with your study center placement coordinator, and a final interview with your host site supervisor. The host site retains the final decision regarding placements, so it’s important that your interviews reflect your maturity, adaptability, curiosity, and commitment to both your career interests and the host organization. Upon successfully completing your study center placement coordinator interview, CEA CAPA guarantees you a placement based on the personal, professional, and cross-cultural goals reflected in your interview. All placements will be secured two weeks prior to arrival.

TThe CEA CAPA Paris Center is Located in the heart of the vibrant Marais District.
Paris, one of the great cultural and intellectual centers of the Western world, is also one of the world's most majestic and beautiful cities and displays proof of a long and vigorous past, from the ruins of an ancient Roman bath to the Cathedral of Notre Dame to the innumerable monuments built to reflect the glory of France and its rulers. The city is known for its cafés (one for every 200 inhabitants), its parks (Bois de Boulogne, Jardin de Luxembourg, Bois de Vincennes), its street life, and its markets. It remains a center for culture, art, fashion, gastronomy, and intellectual life.
For as long as the United States has existed, France has been considered a center of culture within the world and has had a significant impact from contributions to food, art, fashion, and sciences. The largest country in the European Union is also one of the greenest, with stunning natural views and iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Lourve and the Palace of Versailles. The French people are passionate about their country and their way of life. Explore a rich history by visiting classic churches, dive into French cuisine, and enjoy a glass of wine or latte at any of the wonderful French cafes.
France is home to some of the most iconic monuments in the world. In Paris alone, you can see Le Pantheon, L’Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the ultimate symbol of France, the Eiffel Tower. Stop at Le Pantheon, an 18th century Gothic cathedral turned mausoleum, to visit Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Marie Curie, Emile Zola, and other great French citizens buried there. Drive past L’Arc de Triomphe, a famous monument honoring French veterans killed in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, at the equally well-known Champs-Élysées avenue. The Notre Dame Cathedral, a 13th century architectural masterpiece and the inspiration for Victor Hugo’s Hunchback novel, welcomes you to admire its stained-glass windows and hear the ringing of its bells. Snap a photo of yourself with new friends next to the one-of-a-kind Eiffel Tower or better yet, climb to the top of it for a view of the French capital that can’t be beat.
You can find just as much French history beyond Paris as in it. The extravagant Palace of Versailles, once the home of Queen Marie Antoinette, looks much the same as it did in the 18th century. Walk through its Hall of Mirrors and around the ever-beautiful gardens on the palace grounds, in the footsteps of French royalty. To go all the way back to ancient times, picnic on the riverbank next to the Pont du Gard Roman Aqueduct outside Avignon. Visit the beaches in Normandy where a decisive World War II battle took place.
France gave the world some of history’s most influential painters, including Renoir, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Manet, Cezanne, and Gauguin. Many of their works are exhibited at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, often regarded as the best museum in the world. The Louvre, another world-famous art museum, houses great works such Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo statue, The Winged Victory of Samothrace, and other historically significant paintings and sculptures from throughout continental Europe. When you’re finished browsing Paris’ art museums, make sure to see Rodin’s most recognized sculpture, “The Thinker,” outside the Varenne metro station. Go to Giverny to visit Claude Monet’s lovely home and gardens, where the genre-defining painter once lived and worked. The Water Garden, with its Japanese bridge and lily pond, looks just as charming in person as it does in his paintings. Stop in Aix-en-Provence to see Cezanne’s old studio and his beloved subject, Mount Saint Victoire.
Outdoor enthusiasts have an endless number of idyllic landscapes to explore in France. Go skiing or snowboarding in the majestic French Alps near Grenoble, where the miles of soaring, snowy peaks provide some of the best terrain for winter sports. Sunbathe on the luxurious beaches of the French Riviera and swim in the sparkling blue, Mediterranean waters. Breathe in the soothing scent of the lavender fields in Provence, as you stroll through the rows of radiant purple flowers. In Paris, look no further than the Jardin du Luxembourg for a slice of nature. These gardens surrounding the Palace of Luxembourg make for an enchanting oasis in the midst of the city, where you can find apple and pear orchards, an orangery, a vintage carousel, fountains, statues, and a pond where children sail toy boats. Take a walk along the charming canals in Annecy and rent a paddleboat to spend the day on the town’s resplendent lake. Kayak through the unbelievably teal waters of the Verdon Gorges, a stunning river canyon. Explore the magical Côte de Granit Rose in Brittany, one of only three places in the world where pink granite naturally occurs. Visit the Camargue Salt Flats to step into a mystical environment of red and pink lagoons where flamingoes, wild white horses, black bulls, and French cowboys live in harmony.
