Academic Program

This program is not currently accepting any more applications for spring 2014. Please come to 1111 UCC to learn about other programs!

The University of Iowa, in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, offers a study experience in Great Britain every two years during Spring Break. This program will next be offered March 14 - 22, 2014. It carries 2 s.h. of undergraduate or graduate credit. CEUs are also available through La Crosse.

The overall purpose of this popular study tour (offered since 1989) is to foster more health-related linkages and partnerships between the United States and England and Wales. A major focus of this study tour is having the participants become engaged in an in-depth professional and cultural experience to include planned, individualized work-shadowing (practical experience) opportunities.

The program is led by Dr. Christopher Squier of the University of Iowa and by Dr. Gary D. Gilmore of the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse.

Study Tour

The program opens in London with visits to the Royal London Hospital and the Royal Navy Hospital. Tours of the palace of Westminster and the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and the Greenich Meridian are also included.

Moving next to Oxford, the course spends two days attending lectures on public health and epidemiology and touring the university and the community.

The group next visits the house of Edward Jenner in Berkeley, Gloucestershire. Jenner is often called the '"ather of immunology" for his pioneering work on the smallpox vaccine.

The final two days of the class are spent with the Department of Public Health, Southampton General Hospital, and with the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences at the University of Southampton for professional visits/observations.

Travel Arrangements

Round-trip airfare from Cedar Rapids, IA or Minneapolis, MN is included in the program fee. Arrangements can be made for participants who wish to depart from another U.S. airport.

Important notice for participants without a valid U.S. passport, or whose passport will expire before September 2014:

Thos with valid passports should check the expiration date. Passports must be valild for at least 6 months PAST the anticipated return to the U.S. from studying abroad, i.e., through September 2014.

Expedited passport processing service is available (although this takes several weeks and is expensive) and we encourage students to ask at the passport agency at the time of application whether expedited service is recommended.

Lodging (based on double-occupancy) is included in the program fee. If single-occupancy is required, a $315 surcharge is billed.
